Imagine ADoM but with improved tiles and less text :PIf you like the roguelike genre, this is a good one.Highly recommend a playthrough , or 20 lol. Rogue Empire is an excellent roguelike with 3 play modes which provide distinct experiences:Eghoss' tale: This linear playthrough of a 20-level dungeon as a human warrior is richer than I expected, and sets the stage for the main campaign.The Dawn of Shadows Campaign: This is a journey through an Overworld filled with dungeons, towns, and exploration zones. This mode allows you to choose from 7 races and 5 classes each of which have a meaningful impact on strategy and character progression. I find this to be the best way to experience the game.The Challenge Dungeon: This plays very much like Eghoss' tale except that you can choose a race and class as well, and you are presented with complications on each floor, such as becoming hungry more easily, or encountering more champions. This seems to be the easiest to grind for Soul Essence (Especially on the aptly names "I eat dragons for breakfast" difficulty), which is the currency with which you buy meta-progress in the form of bonuses that you can apply to future characters.If I have one concern (though not necessarily a complaint), it's that the grind for Soul Essence takes a long time for each incremental bonus, which are permanently unlocked. This can be viewed in a couple of ways: if you have the time, you will have things to unlock for the foreseeable future. On the other hand, if you dabble game to game as I do, it can be a bit of a tall ask to do several short runs or a good long run in exchange for a +3 to a starting stat. There are definitely some very interesting perks which are unlocked with certain dependencies, however.Card-Based Leveling is a fun experience as is the Legendary equipment system in which you collect three pieces and put them together on an altar for your class to make a set piece. While these aren't necessarily ground-breaking concepts, they are well-implemented in Rogue Empire.Personally, I think the juice is worth the squeeze.. Fun well fleshed out Rouge game with active and responsive developers. Worth a buy.. If you like the rogue-like genre, this is a game you will enjoy. At first I thought it might be too similar to TOME, but after playing for some time I found out that it is very different and has a lot of in depth strategy at higher levels. Each class has its own strengths and weaknesses which really adds to the replay value. Also, getting soul essence to aid future adventures really motivates you to continue. A few tips which will help you enjoy the game (I wish I had known these when I started): 1. Use x to auto explore, 2. Use r to rest and restore mana\\health without potions, 3. If you play a mage ... really concentrate on pouring all your resources into spells - Divine Aegis which absorbs hits and teleport are 2 lifesavers for mages since they are really squishy, 4. There are 3 different types of altars for ancient rune use - agility, arcane, and warrior. Don't make the same mistake I did and use runes on the Arcane altar when you are a warrior\\rogue\\archer. 5. If you get a piece of epic gear which doesn't help you ... don't sell it - extract a rune from the altar when you sacrifice it. 6. Explore as many dungeons as you can before doing the main objectives ... otherwise you won't be high enough level to succeed.. Worth it. If you're ok with the simple graphics, this game is a gem for the altaholic in me. RNG seems fair (and I'm terrible at RNG), the music is good, and the gameplay is engaging enough to hold my interest, and that's hard to do nowadays. Feels like tactics matter and leveling up is a big deal, which is something newer games have lost the sense of. Some things need tweaking but what game doesn't need that. All in all it's a good game in my book.
